Definition: virtual world


(1) In general, the online world or anything to do with computers and technology. See virtual, online and hyperconnected.

(2) Specifically, a 3D computer environment in which users are represented on screen as avatars of themselves or as made-up characters. In a virtual world, people interact with others in real time. Examples are massively multiuser online games (MMOGs) and virtual worlds such as Second Life and Decentraland.
